Robert H. Schmitt, Sr.

Robert H. Schmitt, Sr., 89 of Wheeling, formerly of Clarksburg, died Monday January 6, 2020 in Wheeling Hospital.
He was born in Wheeling on September 7, 1930, a son of the late Lawrence E. Sr. and Eulalia R (Schiffer) Schmitt.
He was a retired District Manager with Bell Atlantic, a 4th degree member of the Knights of Columbus, a volunteer at Good Shepherd Nursing Home, a member of the Elm Grove Civics, the Knights of Columbus Golf Club, the Serra Club where he was Past District Governor of the State of West Virginia, the Short Circuit Club, a volunteer at Catholic Charities 18th Street Neighborhood Center and an active member of St. Vincent de Paul Parish where he was a member of the Funeral Choir.
In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his wife Dorothy A. Bott Schmitt in March 2011, six brothers, Rev. Eugene A Schmitt, Lawrence J. Schmitt, Henry G. Schmitt, Most Rev. Bernard W. Schmitt, former Bishop of the Diocese Wheeling-Charleston, Raymond J. Schmitt and Richard P. Schmitt.
Surviving are his five children, David W. Schmitt and his wife Misty of Rocky Mount, NC, Robert H. Schmitt, Jr and his wife Elena of Hamden CT, Barbara Burns and her husband William of Greenville SC, Nancy LaBrosse and her husband David of Wheeling, Carol Rader and her husband Fred of Vienna, WV, ten grandchildren, Bill Burns and his wife Carolyn, Bryan Burns and his wife Meghan, Beth Burns, Annie LaBrosse Elseroad and her husband Stuart, Garrett LaBrosse and his wife Marissa, Michael Schmitt and his wife Katie, Kristin Schmitt, Emily Rader- Neely and her husband Ryan, Eric Rader and Phillip Schmitt, 7 great-grandchildren, two sister in laws, Vera Witzberger and Marlene Schmitt.
Friends will be received on Friday, January 10, from 1-4 and 6-8 p.m. at Altmeyer Funeral Home, 154 Kruger Street, Elm Grove where a vigil service will be held at 7 p.m. Funeral liturgy will be celebrated on Saturday, January 11, at 10 a.m. at St. Vincent de Paul Catholic Church with Monsignor Kevin M. Quirk as celebrant. Interment will follow at Mt. Calvary Cemetery, Wheeling. Memorial contributions may be made at to the Schmitt Family Charitable Fund or Good Shepherd Nursing Home.
