McMECHEN—Students and faculty of Bishop Donahue Memorial High School (BDHS) in McMechen gathered May 13 to honor the memory of fellow classmate, David Beabout, who tragically died earlier this year.

The memorial began with a prayer service in the school’s gymnasium. Prayers written by faculty and students were read. Following the service, students from the freshman class then presented David’s sister, Katlyn, with a wind-chime in honor of David and a plaque commemorating his honor. The class also held a special fundraiser—raising more than $6,000, which will go toward the formation of the David Beabout Scholarship Fund.

Following the presentation, each of the students wrote a note, which was tied to a balloon and released outside the school.

At St. Vincent de Paul Parish School in Wheeling; where David attended grade school and where his mother, Rebecca, is principal; students also held a service in his honor on May 13—David’s birthday. Students there sang to him and also released balloons in his honor.

In every school across the diocese, students were encouraged to dress in BDHS colors—green and gold—to show their solidarity with the students at BDHS.
