CHARLESTON—Catholic Charities West Virginia (CCWVa) will host its Sixth Annual Autumn Gathering Oct. 28. The event is held to commemorate and inspire the good works of the organization. The keynote speaker for this year’s event is Angela Perez Baraquio, Miss America 2001/Miss Hawaii 2000. Baraquio made history as the first Asian-American woman, the only Filipina woman, and the only teacher to win the Miss America title. “Angela’s poignant message of faith and perseverance is inspirational,” said Patti Phillips, CCWVa director of development and marketing. As Miss America, Baraquio visited more than 40 states on a national speaking tour called “Character in the Classroom: Teaching Values, Valuing Teachers.” Baraquio is also an author, recently publishing “Amazing Win, Amazing Loss: Miss America Living Happily, EVEN After.” Baraquio says that she is a teacher at her core, whether in her role as Miss America, as a mother, or as a business professional; and that she enjoys being able to inspire others to achieve their own goals and dreams. The Autumn Gathering will be held at the Embassy Suites in Charleston. Reservations may be made online at www.CatholicCharitiesWV.org or by calling 888-900-2989.
