Officials from the Diocese of Wheeling-Charleston and Catholic Schools in Ohio and Marshall Counties honored men and women who made significant contributions of time, talent and treasure to Catholic schools during the 2015 Cancer Research Classic (CRC) basketball tournament held at Wheeling Jesuit University (WJU) Jan. 2-3. Each was honored with a game ball signed by Dr. Gregory Merrick, CRC director and executive director of the Schiffler Cancer Center, Urologic Research Institute and Men’s Health Center, all at Wheeling Hospital. Pictured are this year’s honorees with their game ball (from left): Stanley Kaniecki, Wheeling Central Catholic High School; John Pastorius, Bishop Donahue Memorial High School in McMechen; Jenni Elias, St. Michael Parish School in Wheeling; Adam Shinsky, St. Vincent de Paul Parish School in Wheeling; Judy Hays, Our Lady of Peace School in Wheeling; Sue Agostinelli, Corpus Christi School in Wheeling; and Diane Bauer, SS. James and John School in Benwood. The diocese also presented one luck winner from each Catholic school in Ohio and Marshall counties, who attended the tournament, with a $200 scholarship. The basketball tournament featured some of the top rated boy’s high school teams from across the country in addition to local schools. The event was sponsored by Wheeling Hospital’s Schiffler Cancer Center, Urologic Research Institute (URI) and the Men’s Health Center, as well as WJU.
