Bishop Emeritus Schmitt to Receive Patron of Youth Award

WHEELING— Bishop Emeritus Bernard W. Schmitt has been named the second recipient of the Dr. Lee Jones Patron of Youth award by the Wheeling YMCA for his dedication to youth and families in the community. “Bishop Schmitt has always been a great role model for people of all ages,” said Patrick Henry, president of the YMCA board of directors. “He has been a pillar of stability for the community.” The award will be presented to Bishop Schmitt during the Light of the Valley luncheon Aug. 20 at noon at the White Palace in Wheeling Park. West Virginia University head football coach Bill Stewart is slated to be the guest speaker. Bishop Schmitt was thought of immediately when the board met to select an individual for the award. “When we had a meeting of the YMCA board of directors to select a deserving person to honor … my first thought and recommendation was Bernard Schmitt—a man from the small town of Warwood who had risen to the pinnacle of the Diocese of Wheeling-Charleston,” said Larry Williams, chairman of the Light of the Valley. “The YMCA board of directors unanimously agreed with the recommendation. It will be a thrill for those of us who know Bishop Schmitt to see him honored in this manner.” The award was named in memory of the late Dr. Edmund “Lee” Jones, whose own contributions were exemplary over the decades. Mike Panas, executive director of the Wheeling YMCA, said the award is a fitting tribute to both Jones and Bishop Schmitt. “The recipient should serve as a shinning light in our valley and their deeds as an inspiration for others to follow,” he said. “Dr. Jones loved children and was a leader at the YMCA. We believe that, in his name, we made the correct selection to honor Bishop Emeritus Schmitt because of his years of dedicated work to our community.” Proceeds from the event will be placed in the YMCA Endowment Fund. Panas is also preparing a tribute journal in which individual groups or major sponsors can place a congratulatory message to Bishop Schmitt. Attendees of the luncheon will receive a copy of the journal as a keepsake. To place a congratulatory note in the journal, contact Panas. For tickets, contact Panas or any YMCA board member at the Wheeling YMCA at 242-8086. Tickets may be purchased individually or by a table of eight.
